Research On Antonio De Holanda Miniatures Artistic Production

450 years after the death of the great Renaissance artist António de Holanda, a transnational, multi-institutional research consortium is, for the first time, developing an integrated and interdisciplinary study of his illuminated masterpieces spread by several leading international Libraries and archives, spanning from northern to southern Europe. Despite having produced some of the most emblematic artworks of his period, such as the “Atlas Miller” (BnF, GE DD-683, 5 RES) and the “Genealogy of Infant D. Fernando” (BL, Add MS 12531, no7), the lack of studies on his work is striking.

The ROADMAP project aims to establish:

The chronology of António de Holanda’s technical procedures, including the evolution of painting and drawing techniques,  the fingerprints of his paintings, and the relationship between  his underdrawings and paintings. The connections between Holanda and those with whom he collaborated, such as Simon Bening, João de Menelau, Francisco de Holanda, as well as the Homem and Reinel

family cartographers involved in producing the atlas Miller.

To develop an easy-to-use tool for validating Holanda’s works based on his artistic fingerprints gathered from the ROADMAP initiative. To become a platform for advanced training in the multidisciplinary articulation between Art History and Heritage Sciences applied to the study of illuminated books.
